Looking for an alternative to therapy?

Have you ever Googled, “Therapist near me” and gotten overwhelmed by the options? Holistic therapy, talk therapy, person centered therapy, family therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, the list goes on. It is a big step to search for help, whether for depression, relationship issues, addressing traumas, or just talking through life’s stressors with a trusted person.

Is traditional therapy right for me?

For many people, traditional therapy is often necessary and life-changing, irreplaceable by any self-help book or TED Talk. Survivors of abuse, people who battle addictions, those experiencing self-harm or suicidal thoughts, and many others should seek the help of a medical or mental health professional.

For others, the stresses and anxieties of life, relational issues, and a general desire to get more out of life is enough to provoke the thought, “Should I see a therapist?” But if you have ever been in this position, you might know that combing through all the types of therapy options can cause more stress than relieve it!

Why you might want to find an alternative to therapy

If you’ve ever wanted a change in life but aren’t sure that therapy is for you, I’m here to tell you that there is another option! There isn’t just one alternative to therapy to choose from, but the first step to finding the right one for you is to ask yourself, “Why do I want this?”

Some ideas to get you started are:

  • You have had bad or unhelpful experiences with traditional therapy in the past
  • Talking about your problems isn’t what you need to actually solve them
  • You don’t have time to find the right therapist or type of therapy
  • The cost isn’t sustainable

Which alternative to therapy is right for me?

There are many alternatives to therapy, as exemplified by this list. Here you’ll find an “alternative to therapy” for just about anyone – chess therapy, dance therapy, chat and text services, and then the more commonly suggested options of meditation and exercise.
